How to choose the right bra size: Clara's advice
Is there any underwear more precious to a woman than a bra? It's the best ally in your closet to ensure that daily feeling of well-being and comfort.
The bra is the perfect accomplice to give your silhouette that touch of femininity and sensuality , making us always feel at our best.
Today we'll guide you through choosing the bra that best suits your needs, starting with the most important step: finding the right size.
Clara's advice on how to choose the right bra size.
Choosing the right bra is the first step to ensuring your décolleté receives ideal support , avoiding sizes that are either too tight or too loose, which can create an uncomfortable feeling of constriction. Although sizes are obviously subject to slight variations depending on the model and brand we purchase, they all follow a precise measurement system.
What you need to know before you start
The first piece of advice we give you is to wear the best bra you own , the one you find most comfortable. Remember that it shouldn't be padded in any way, but rather a truly soft garment .
The second is to equip yourself with a tape measure, which will ensure an accurate measurement . The third is to download and print this
made by Clara : a real treasure to be jealously guarded, that you will have in your hands, to use whenever you need it.
Now let's start calculating the two measurements!
1) Measure the underbust measurement
There are two measurements we're interested in : the underbust measurement and the bust measurement. Let's start with the first , which will give us the bra size in centimeters . If the underbust measurement is 69 cm, as you can see in the guide, we'll have a second size.
When measuring, keep your arms relaxed, pointing downward, and in an upright position . If you measure differently, you risk miscalculating the underbust measurement, resulting in measurements that are either too tight or too loose.

2) Measure your breasts
The second measurement we need is the breast size , which indicates the cup size , expressed in Italian letters (A, B, C, and so on). The procedure is as follows : take the measuring tape and this time start from the fullest and most ample part of the breast . Remember not to tighten the measuring tape too much: if you do, you will end up with a measurement smaller than the actual one, which will cause that annoying feeling of constriction that comes with bras that are too small.
Both measurements should be taken in front of a mirror : this will help you avoid any errors and inaccuracies related to poor posture . Always keep in mind the size and width of your breasts: if you have a generous cleavage, we recommend leaning forward slightly to take the measurement.
3) Let's now calculate Size and Cup with the two measurements
Once you've noted these two measurements, you're done . The underbust measurement in cm will indicate your size. For example, if the first value corresponds to 86 cm, I will be a size 5. Now, for the fifth size, I will identify the cup size. If the bust measurement is 100 cm, I will have a B cup; if instead it is 104 cm, I will have a D cup.
Never forget what we're about to tell you: cup size isn't an absolute value . For example, if you have a B cup, don't assume it's the same on models from different brands, which may have different characteristics.
How to know if your bra fits perfectly?
Before buying a bra, always remember to measure it . Don't feel embarrassed: the reason many lingerie stores allow you to try on bras is precisely to prevent customers from choosing the wrong model or size .
Don't panic if you can't immediately find underwear that suits your needs: as we've said, choosing the right bra is essential to ensure proper support and comfort. To determine if a bra fits perfectly, do the following tests.
1) Check the underbust band
The underbust band is the most important part of the bra . It supports 80% of the weight of the breast and therefore needs to fit snugly . To perform the test, it's best to fasten the bra using the outermost clasp.
The best way to check if the band size is correct is to slide two fingers under the edge of the fabric. If there's room, you won't have any problems. If there isn't, it means the band is too tight and will almost certainly cause discomfort and pain once you put the bra on.
When the underbust band is perfectly positioned, it will be parallel to your rib cage .

2) Check the shoulder pads
The straps are the other fundamental part of the bra, as they support the remaining 20% of your décolleté . They should be adjusted according to your height and should never , we repeat, never , be pulled so tightly that they create dimples in the skin.
If they are too tight on the shoulders, they can cause long-term problems (including back pain, headaches and even poor posture).
The test here too is to pass two fingers under the shoulder straps: if there is space, you have positioned them correctly.
3) Check the stability of the bra
To check the stability of the bra , raise your arms , lean back slightly and check if the bra rides up towards your breasts but doesn't stay in place. If this happens, change the size .
To fit your needs, the bra's elastic should be aligned both under the bust and at the back. If it isn't, the size is incorrect.
4) Check the cups to avoid the quadrilateral effect
What does the quadrilateral effect mean ? When instead of two breasts, it looks like we have four ! This happens when the cups are too small for our physique and therefore there is not enough space to support the décolleté. The cups must contain the full volume of our breasts, shaping and enveloping them correctly .
To understand if the measurement is correct:
- The center of the breast should rest on the sternum;
- The cup and underwire must be large enough to completely contain the décolleté;
- the lateral band rests on the rib cage and not on the gland;
- the cup also envelops the breast at the top, without creating the effect mentioned above.
5) Be careful with underwires
Finally, we urge you to pay close attention to underwires . If not fitted correctly, they can cause serious problems . Also check the materials they are made of: for example, the presence of nickel underwires could cause allergies in those sensitive to this element. Precisely for this reason, Clara has decided to use all metal parts of the bra “Nickel-free”.
6) The final check
Once these checks have been carried out, all that remains is to wear the bra under a shirt or T-shirt.
You will then be able to check:
- The visibility of the seams;
- The fit of the model;
- Correct support for the décolleté;
- The presence of any “rolls on the back and under the arm” (which are caused by a band that is too tight).
